About four years ago I was having severe pain in my lower right hip area due to a pinched sciatic nerve from the lower back.

Two emergency room trips to the hospital, morphine shots and Oxycodone provided temporary relief. Lower back surgery was being discussed, but my doctor also recommended both floor and water therapy first.

Therapy worked—daily floor stretching, pool exercises and swimming three times a week now keep me from pain, surgery and prescription drugs. The pool located in the Max Peterson Field House is a wonderful facility and I obviously utilize it to the fullest!  I need the pool—the community needs the pool.

    Kate & Mary
Mary was a physical education teacher for 31 years and was always very active until she found out she was diagnosed with a crippling arthritis.  Although not learning to swim until she was 17, pools have played a huge role in helping her through her condition.  To date Mary has over 6000 miles logged at various pools.  Mary loves and needs the pool.

Kate met Mary 19 years ago at Marinette High School when Kate moved back to the area.  After living with MS, Kate moved back to Marinette to increase her quality of life and take better care of herself.   Mary helped Kate (Remove the word to) realize that she should not feel sorry for herself and encouraged her to use the pool for therapy and rehabilitation.  Without the pool therapy, Kate’s doctor at Northwestern said she may not have been able to function or to walk anymore. Mary has continued to be an inspiration for Kate.  Kate said, “If Mary can do it, what excuse do I have?”
